Why Laser Hair Reduction Takes Multiple Sessions
One of the most common questions at consultation is why laser hair reduction cannot be done in one appointment. The answer is about how hair grows.
Hair is not all in the same phase
Hair on any part of the body cycles through different phases — active growth, transition and rest. At any given moment, the hairs in a single area are distributed across these phases rather than synchronised.
Laser hair reduction targets hair in its active growth phase. Hair in other phases is not meaningfully affected by a session. This is why a single appointment cannot address all the hair in an area, however well it is performed.
Which is why sessions are spaced
Sessions are scheduled at intervals so that treatment catches hair as it enters the active phase. The appropriate interval varies by body area, because cycle timing differs across the body — which is why your schedule is set at consultation rather than following a universal rule.
Why we will not quote a session count online
The number of sessions appropriate varies genuinely between individuals, depending on the area, hair characteristics, skin tone and individual response. Any number quoted before assessment would be a guess presented as a fact.
At consultation, after assessment and a patch test, we will give you a realistic indication — and adjust it based on how you actually respond as the course progresses.
Between sessions
Do not wax, thread or pluck the area between appointments — the follicle needs to be present for treatment to work. Shaving is generally advised instead. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning. And tell us about any change in medication, health or pregnancy status before each session, as it can affect suitability.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Suitability for laser hair reduction is assessed individually with a patch test.
