Pigmentation Is Not One Condition

“Pigmentation” gets used as though it describes one thing. It does not — and that distinction has real consequences for how it should be treated.

Different forms, different behaviour

Marks that remain after a spot or other inflammation has settled are one thing. Patches that develop after prolonged sun exposure are another. Pigmentation with hormonal contributors behaves differently again, and is notably prone to recurrence.

These sit at different depths, have different triggers and respond differently to the same treatment. Approaching them identically produces inconsistent results at best.

Why the wrong approach can worsen it

This is the part worth understanding. Pigmentation can itself be triggered by inflammation — which means a treatment that is too aggressive for your skin can contribute to the very thing you are trying to reduce.

The risk is more pronounced for deeper skin tones, where post-inflammatory pigmentation is a more common complication. This is precisely why we take a conservative, graded approach and adjust based on observed response.

Sun protection is not negotiable

Whatever form of pigmentation is present, sun protection is part of the plan. Treating pigmentation while continuing unprotected exposure works against the treatment. We say this to every pigmentation patient, and we mean it.

Some forms need managing, not curing

Certain types of pigmentation are prone to recurrence and are better framed as requiring ongoing management than a one-off course. Where that applies, we will say so at consultation — so that your plan is built around maintenance from the start rather than presented as a permanent fix and then quietly disappointing you.
